Tax Planning

The Cornerstone of Your Financial Plan

Of everything a financial plan can improve, few decisions carry more long-term impact than how you're taxed. We treat tax strategy as the foundation everything else is built on, not an afterthought each spring.

It's Not What You Earn.

It's What You Keep.

Proactive tax planning determines how much of your growth you actually keep. Taxes touch nearly every decision - Roth conversions, investment sales, retirement income - so we plan for those moments before they happen.

A CPA's job is to help you pay as little as possible on this year's return. Ours is to help you pay as little as possible across your entire lifetime, and to leave your spouse or the next generation a plan that's just as efficient as the one you built.

Taxes are one of the largest expenses you'll ever pay, spread quietly across decades rather than felt all at once. Which is exactly why tax planning is woven into every financial planning engagement here, not treated as a separate service.

What Does Proactive Tax Planning Actually Look Like?

"Proactive" is easy to put on a website. Here's what it means in practice. Tax-efficient investing requires more than selecting low-turnover funds, it requires a strategy that gets revisited as your income, account balances, and the tax code all shift. Each of the following is a real planning lever we evaluate for every client, not a checklist we run once and file away.

Roth Conversion Planning

The years between retirement and required minimum distributions often create a narrow window of lower taxable income, ideal for a Roth conversion. Moving money into a Roth here means paying tax now at a lower rate, then growing and withdrawing it entirely tax-free later. Because that income is never taxable, it becomes a tool for controlling your tax bracket throughout retirement.

Direct Indexing & Tax-Loss Harvesting

Rather than a mutual fund or ETF, we hold the individual stocks inside an index directly in your account. When a position is down, we sell it to harvest the loss, then immediately replace it with a similar stock, say, Home Depot for Lowe's, keeping your exposure intact. Those losses can offset gains, reduce ordinary income, or carry forward to future years.

Distribution & RMD Strategy

Once required minimum distributions begin, the order and timing of your withdrawals become part of a bigger strategy, not just a deadline to meet. We plan for RMDs well before they're required, coordinating that timing with your broader retirement income plan.

Charitable Giving Strategy

For clients who give, how you give can matter as much as how much. Gifting appreciated stock instead of cash avoids capital gains entirely. A donor-advised fund can bunch several years of giving into one high-deduction year. Qualified Charitable Distributions let those 70½ and older give directly from an IRA, tax-free. We help structure giving so it works as hard as the rest of your plan.

Tax Planning for Business Owners

Owning a business opens up tax planning opportunities an individual return doesn't have. We work directly alongside your CPA on decisions like entity structure and reasonable compensation, along with retirement plan design, choosing and implementing the right 401(k), cash balance plan, or combination of the two based on your income and goals. The right plan can shelter significantly more income than a standard 401(k) alone.

Asset Location

What Is Asset Location, and Why Does It Matter?

Asset allocation is what you own, your mix of stocks, bonds, and other holdings. Asset location is where you hold those holdings, and it can matter just as much. Every account falls into one of three tax "buckets," and how your money is spread across them can shape how much of your retirement income actually reaches you.

Traditional 401(k), traditional IRA,

403(b) and 457 plans, pension and

cash balance plans

--

Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary

income when you take them out.

Brokerage accounts, real estate,

proceeds from a business sale

--

Growth is generally taxed at capital

gains rates, often lower than ordinary

income, and sometimes 0%

depending on your income.

Roth IRA, Roth 401(k) and 403(b),

health savings accounts, municipal

bonds

--

Qualified withdrawals aren't taxed at

all, and don't count as income.

Most people accumulate savings primarily in only one bucket, tax-deferred accounts like a 401(k) or IRA, simply because that's where employer retirement plans default. When every withdrawal comes from that same bucket, every dollar is taxed as ordinary income, with little room to manage your tax bracket. Diversifying across all three buckets gives us real levers to pull each year, including access to a 0% federal tax rate on long-term capital gains available to investors who keep their taxable income below certain thresholds. The result is a retirement income plan you can actually shape, not one dictated by where your money happened to accumulate.

Common Tax Planning Questions

  • Will you work with my current CPA, or do I need to switch?

You don't need to switch. We genuinely enjoy collaborating with a client's existing CPA, bringing our planning perspective alongside their preparation expertise so you get one cohesive strategy instead of two disconnected ones.

  • What if I've never had any real tax planning done before?

That's a great place to start, not a setback. Most of the value in tax planning comes from decisions made going forward, so there's no such thing as starting too late, only opportunities still ahead of you.

  • What should I do if I get a large bonus, stock vesting, or other one-time windfall?

Reach out before you act, if possible. Timing often matters just as much as the amount, and a quick conversation beforehand can meaningfully change the tax outcome.

  • Can you review my past tax returns to see if anything's been missed?

Yes, and we'd love to. We use dedicated software to analyze past returns for missed deductions, credits, or opportunities, and it's often an encouraging first conversation, not a critical one.
